Just a question

In looking at the possibility that we may move before we have a job (a scenario we considered very likely when putting our house on the market. We wanted to be able to tell people when our availability would be) we thought we would just move into an apartment for the interim. The only thing is that many apartments have at least 6 month lease terms, which we're hoping we will be able to find a job before that point, but of course we don't really know, so we need something flexible. With the chance that we may (however unlikely it is that we sell our house quickly, but still) sell our house sooner than we thought, it has made us kick our search into gear just to be prepared.

So I ask you. Do you know what other people in this situation do? Do you know of some places that have flexible (and are cheap) leasing terms. We want to keep it cheap because we would like to possibly store the majority of our stuff, and that is not all that cheap either. (Do you have suggestions for that?) We have looked into pods, DFS, etc. because it would be great to pack the stuff into the bin they deliver and pick up and then just have them move it across country for us when the time comes--but again, it looks kinda pricey at this point. Do you know of any that are more reasonable or better than the others?

Okay, just looking for some free advice. I know other people have to have been in this position before, whether with finding a new job or building a house where the timeline isn't exact.

Muchas gracias. :)

  1. I don't know about Utah but in Texas we have a lot of the Extended stay hotels where you can rent by the week or month. It's obviously not as nice as an apartment (you do get housekeeping though!) but an option. As for your stuff--most likely your job will reimburse you for moving expenses and doing the pods thing might be the only option other then putting your stuff in a storage unit via Uhaul.

  2. Most people will do one of two things- 1. Sign up for a 6 month lease after asking what the penalties are for discharging the lease early. Some penalties are reasonable- some aren't.

    2. If the penalties are not reasonable, then you look for a month to month lease option. This WILL carry a premium because the apartment is assuming the risk of you leaving at will. Some places, usually by a large tech company, have reasonable month to month rates because the large company hires people a lot that need to relocate. Up in north Austin there are tons of apartments that offer month to month, 3/6/9/12/18 month leases. The smaller the lease time the more expensive, but they do exist.

    Good luck!

  3. Yeah, I'm not much help here. I would just have to say get a storage unit and rent month to month if you can. I think that's about all I got. :)

  4. pods are great for moving, but nothing beats the old storage unit for price. It might be quite a bit cheaper to move it yourself. I've never lived short term except for with family. But, I know with the economic situation a lot of people are renting basements and such. Good luck!
